Dhaka: The Historic Capital
Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh founded by the Mughals in 1608, it was once known as the “City of Mosque”. Dhaka today looks vibrant with more vehicles rushing through old and new Dhaka. The Sundarbans: Home of the Royal Bengal Tiger
In the South Western part of Bangladesh, there is another inescapable destination; the single largest mangrove forest in the world.
The Sundarban, this UNESCO world heritage site is unique for yet another reason. Here we find the world’s biggest cat, “The Royal Bengal Tiger”. You may not always have a chance to meet the tigers, but you can be sure of one thing: the king of the jungle is always keeping an eye on you.
Apart from the tigers, the forest treasures different species of plants, reptailes, birds, and mammals.
People living around Sundarban live by the age-old traditions of wild honey collection and fishing with otters. And yes! There is Bonbibi, the forest goddess protecting everyone from evils. The annual fair of Rash Purnima in the Dubla Island is yet another attraction.
Bagerhat: The Mosque City
Bagerhat, an hour’s drive from khulna, is also known as “The Mosque City”, built by General Khan Jahan in the 15th century. The Shat-Gombuj Mashjid is one of the remainders of the once affluent city of Bagerhat. This is now a UNESCO world Heritage site also.
North-West Bangladesh: Heritage of Faith and Civilization
The North-Western part of Bangladesh embody the rise and fall of Hinduism, Buddhism and Islam through changing eras. Mahasthangarh is an old fortress city where Buddha himself was said to have visited.
The ancient Buddhist Monastery in Paharpur is the biggest in the South of the Himalayas. The architecture of Paharpur has been declared an UNESCO world heritage site.
In Rajshahi region, you can visit the Verendra Museum, Kusumba mosque. the Sona Mosque and the famous magnificent temple city Putia built during 1823.
The Kanthajee temple is the most ornate mediaeval temple in the country, built by Maharaja Pran Nath in1752.
Sylhet: The Land of Two Leaves and a Bud
The North Eastern zone Sylhet, is also known as “the land of the two leaves and a bud”, getting its name from the vast tea plantations blanketing the hilly region.
Srimongal with a concentration of 120 tea gardens is popularly known as the tea capital of Bangladesh.
An hours Bus journey from Sylhet could take you to Sunamganj: Predominantly a haor or depressed land – where millions of migratory birds from Siberia flock during winter.
Chittagong, Hill Tracts and Cox’s Bazar
Chittagong, the Port-City is located South-East from Dhaka. It lies on the bank of the Karnaphuli river, at the edge of the Bay of Bengal. Some of the main attractions are Shrine of Islamic Saint Bayzid Bostami, Chandanpura mosque and the 2nd World War Cemetery.
The Hill Tracts of Rangamati, Bandarban and Khagrachari are home to many different groups of indigenous people of Mongolian ancestry with their individual cultures & customs.
To enjoy the fascinating beauty of this hilly region, you can take a boat trip on the emerald blue water of the Rangamati Lake, climb up the Chimbuk hill and literally hold the clouds in your hand.
Only 150 km away from Chittagong, there is another place which a tourist cannot afford to miss. Cox’s Bazar- the world’s longest unbroken beach.
The ancient Arakan Hills in the background and numbers of Buddhist temples make Cox’s Bazar spiritually charged. And yes, you must not miss a pleasure trip to Saint Martians Island, the only coral island in Bangladesh.
